The Biggest Opening, Often Forgotten

If a garage door fails and the garage is attached, wind enters and pressurizes the structure from inside, pushing outward on the roof. That is how houses whose roofs were adequately built lose them, and it is why the garage door matters more than its cost suggests.

It is also the opening most often excluded from a quote without discussion. Garage doors are a different trade, they are sometimes handled by a different supplier, and a homeowner comparing window quotes may not notice that the largest opening in the house is absent from all of them.

Wind entering through a failed garage door pressurizes the interior. That internal pressure adds to the external suction already acting on the roof, and the two together can exceed what the roof structure was designed to resist.

It is the reason garage doors are treated as part of the building envelope rather than as a convenience item, and why an otherwise well-protected house with an unrated garage door has a weak point that undermines everything else.

Do not skip the garage door because everything else is done. It is the largest opening in most homes, and a failure there changes the loading on the whole structure rather than just letting water in.
