The two paths
Florida operates two product approval routes for building products.
- The High Velocity Hurricane Zone regime, applying to Miami-Dade and Broward.
- Statewide Florida Product Approval, applying elsewhere — including all of Tampa Bay.
- Both are legitimate, and only one is your requirement.
- Products may carry either, or both.
- Your building department confirms what it accepts.
Why it matters to your wallet
HVHZ products are tested to a regime designed for the highest-exposure part of the state, and they are frequently priced accordingly.
At a Tampa Bay address, a product with statewide approval that meets your calculated design pressures is fully compliant. Paying an HVHZ premium for a requirement you do not have is money that buys nothing.
Why it also matters to your safety
The reverse error is worse. A product chosen on price without checking it meets the calculated pressures for your specific openings can be under-rated, and the approval regime does not save you from that.
The requirement is always: adequate design pressure, met by a product approved for the size and configuration used, installed as the approval instructs.
